It might have collected some dirt in the bin. Not sure...The black cover section is 11.5 inches long and the UV bulb is held under it by black plastic pieces that clamp the bulb. Google tells me that 5 gallon aquariums are 16 inches long, so this would fit lengthwise. If you have a smaller tank, you would need to measure it for fit.It has a pushbutton to touch to turn it on. You can select 3hrs a day, or 6, or 12, or continuous operation.It powers up nicely. UVC will kill the green algae that is exposed to it.( they say to sample to not expose the fish... )I dont have an aquarium now, but maybe you do, and maybe you have algae?About $20 on Amazon
